Sri S.Rathnakaran Bhagavathar was born in a Viswakarma family with tradition of music. His father Sivaraman Bhagavather, his uncle Kochukrishnan Asan and his elders brother Madhavankutty Asan were all reputed musicians.He improved his talent from the famous musician Vaikom Vasudevan Nair, Vidwan Kadakkavoor Renganatha Bhagavathar and Madurai K. V. Kesava Bhagavather (principal of Sri Swati Thirunal Music Academy, Thiruvananthapuram).
While he was a student of Sri Swathy Thirunal Music Academy, he selected as a vocal artist in All India Radio.Through his hardwork and dedication he became the music director in the Light music division and more than two thousand songs and composed a Varnam in Bahudhari raga. He retired from Akashavani in 1990. As early as in 1955 he was adjudged as a B high artist in Akashavani and in 1972 as an A grade artist. For the last fifty years Sri S. Ratnakaran Bhagavather has been in concert in different parts of India including the Akasavani Sangeetha Sammelan, National Programme. He still performs in Akashavani and Doordarshan.
